Not-for-Profit Finance Week, an initiative of Commonwealth Bank and Our Community, is a celebration of ideas, knowledge and financial capacity-building for the $100 billion Australian not-for-profit sector.

The aim of this event, held 9-13 August 2021, is to increase the profile of the not-for-profit sector, bolster the financial capacity and sustainability of the sector, and provide support for the staff, board members and treasurers carrying out the important task of overseeing the finances.

Activities during Not-for-Profit Finance Week included:

Lisa Jennings
Lisa Jennings
Executive Director, Learning and Education, Institute of Community Directors Australia (ICDA)

Lisa joined Our Community in 2018 as a trainer for NFP organisations and boards. She has had a varied career as a professional orchestral musician, lecturer and university department head in music and arts management, as well as working in social enterprises and government, using the arts as a vehicle for learning and social change.

Lisa holds Masters Degrees in Music Performance and Public Policy & Management, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Arts Management. In her spare time she volunteers for a number of organisations providing accessible arts education for young people, and better cycling infrastructure in our towns and cities. Lisa’s key areas of interest include Not-for-profit sector governance and management; Public policy; Women in leadership; Arts management and leadership; and Fundraising and grant seeking.

Julienne Price

Julienne Price
Head of Schools and Not-for-Profit Banking, Commonwealth Bank

Julienne Price has spent over 20 years working in the finance sector, specialising in social sector banking. Drawing on her extensive and in-depth experience across both the finance and community sectors, Julienne has driven programs to deepen sector knowledge and understanding, including the training and accreditation of over 500 sector specialist bankers.

Julienne is committed to supporting and facilitating the growth of financial literacy and improving efficiency across the community sector. She spearheads a number of thought leadership programs aimed at sharing knowledge, as well as the benefits that innovation can bring to further support the development of a financially strong and robust community sector.

Julienne is a representative for CommBank’s Staff Community Fund, facilitates CommBank’s annual grant giving program, and is a mentor and a volunteer across a number of charities.

Denis Moriarty
Group Managing Director, Our Community

Denis Moriarty is the founder of Our Community and serves as Group Managing Director. He has a strong background in executive management in both the public and private sectors. He has served as head of the Victorian Government's Information Service, Managing Director of Strategic Australia Pty Ltd (a boutique management consultancy), and Commissioner and Deputy CEO of the Victorian Tourism Commission.

Denis is a graduate of the Vincent Fairfax Ethics in Leadership program and the Williamson Community Leadership Program, and a member of several not-for-profit, private and academic boards. He is passionate about change and is driven by a desire to improve the lives of the most disadvantaged in society in a way that assists individuals and communities to take charge of their own destiny.

Denis was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2001 for his work in establishing Our Community and was awarded an AM in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Adj. Professor Susan Pascoe AM
President and Chair, Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), and Chair, Community Directors Council

Susan Pascoe is the President and Chair of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), Chair of the Community Director’s Council, and of the Principals Australia Institute Certification Advisory Board. She is a member of the board of Mercy Health; Principal of Kadisha Enterprises and an Associate of Baxter Lawley - both of which provide consultancy services primarily to government and the not-for-profit sector in the areas of governance, professional standards, strategic planning, and leadership.

Susan was the inaugural Commissioner for the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC), Australia's first national, independent regulator of charities from 2012 – 17. She led the Taskforce to create the ACNC in 2011 working across Commonwealth agencies, with the sector, and with states and territories to win consensus for a workable model.

From 2006 – 11 Susan was Commissioner of the State Services Authority in Victoria, chairing regulatory and policy reviews for the Victorian Government. She was appointed in 2009 as one of three Commissioners for the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Black Saturday Bushfires.

Her earlier career was in education, where she served as President of the Australian College of Educators, CEO of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority and Chief Executive of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. Susan chaired the Australian National Commission for UNESCO, and chaired or served on a number of government, health and education boards.

In 2007 her significant achievements and leadership were acknowledged when she was appointed Member of the Order of Australia. In November 2016 she was awarded the Leadership in Government Award for her outstanding contribution to public administration in Australia.

David Crosbie

David Crosbie
CEO, Community Council for Australia

David Crosbie has spent more than 20 years as CEO of significant charities including eight years in his current role at the Community Council for Australia (CCA), four years as CEO of the Mental Health Council of Australia, seven years as CEO of the Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia, and seven years as CEO of Odyssey House Victoria.

In addition to the work he leads at the Community Council for Australia, David served on the inaugural Advisory Board of the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC), the Advisory Board of Impact Investing Australia, the Board of the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (among others). He is a respected leader and advocate on issues affecting the contribution, performance and viability of NFPs in political, public, business and sector circles. David is passionate about CCA’s mission to build flourishing communities by enhancing the extraordinary work undertaken by the charities and not for profit sector in Australia.

David Gilchrist

David Gilchrist
Professor of Accounting, University of Western Australia

David has held a number of senior roles in the not-for-profit, commercial and public sectors in a career spanning more than 25 years. Most recently, he held the role of Assistant Auditor General in Western Australia and, prior to that, he taught accounting and finance at the London School of Economics and Portsmouth University in the UK as well as at Curtin University and Edith Cowan University in Australia.

He was Foundation Director of the Curtin Not-for-Profit Initiative for five years and held the position of Associate Dean of the School of Business at the University of Notre Dame Australia where he was adjunct professor of Not-for-Profit Leadership. He is currently a Visiting Professor and Research Chief Investigator at Hebei GEO University, Peoples’ Republic of China. David has advised a number of Australian governments and authorities relating to human services governance, sustainability, accountability and strategy, most recently related to the NDIS amongst other things.

A chartered accountant and economic historian, David has a PhD in economic history from the University of Notre Dame Australia and is currently professor of accounting at the University of Western Australia. In addition he holds a number of industry roles including: Chairman – Australian Scholarships Ltd; Director – BaxterLawley Advisory; and is a Member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand’s Trans-Tasman Not-for-Profit Advisory Committee and the Australian Accounting Standards Board Academic Advisory Panel.


Stephen Halmarick
Chief Economist and Head of Global Economic & Markets Research, Commonwealth Bank

Stephen has over 35 years’ experience as a financial markets economist and is widely regarded as one of the best economic communicators and presenters in Australia. Prior to his current role in CBA, Stephen was Chief Economist for Colonial First State Global Asset Management and has previously worked for Westpac, SBC Australia, the Nomura Research Institute and from 1994-2009 the Salomon Smith Barney Citibank group as the Managing Director and Co-Head of Economic and Market Analysis.

At CommBank, Stephen is responsible for the Bank’s team of economists and strategists that cover Australian Economics, International Economics, Rates, Fixed Income, Foreign Exchange, Credit and Commodities research. He and his team ensure that customers and clients are well informed and have a strong understanding of key macroeconomic factors in Australia and globally and their impact on a broad range of financial markets. In March 2016 Stephen was elected as a Member Director on the Commonwealth Bank Group Staff Superannuation Fund Board and is a member of the Bank’s Risk & Audit Committee.

Stephen is a life member of the Australian Business Economists (ABE) - the peak professional body for financial market economists in Australia. He served as their Chairman from 2008-2017 and has been on the ABE Executive Committee for over 20 years. He lives in Sydney with his wife – and their ‘blended’ family of six children.


Eloise Newbury
Innovation Manager, Schools and Not-for-Profit Sector Banking, Commonwealth Bank

Eloise has built her career working with clients ranging from small businesses to large organisations, helping each to better define and articulate their needs as well as those of key stakeholders. Converting these insights into positive design features of both technology and customer interactions is the ultimate goal regardless of client size. Eloise has held varying roles from working with cloud based software, process design and improvement, and the design and delivery of training curriculums.

Eloise brings ‘Design Thinking’ to life for clients to help them empathise with their customers, and create services, products and solutions that assist in driving more effective outcomes. Past studies have included User Experience Design, Visual Merchandising, Operational Management, and she is currently studying Interaction Design.
